And a ruler asked him, " Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?" And Jesus said to him, "Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone. You know the commandments: 'Do not commit adultery, Do not murder, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother.'"
What does Jesus mean by "No one is good except God alone"? Jesus is God so why does he use such sentence?
if God was not sinless and holy, then we would have no hope for salvation. The sacrifice of a pure sinless spotless lamb was what was required in the old covenant in order to atone for people’s sin. Jesus is the only person who ever walked the face of this earth that lived in sinless life. That is why he came to pay the price for us that we might be saved by the free gift of God. We are then save not by anything we’ve done, but what He did for us. Remember Jesus was not conceived by natural means. He was conceived by the Holy Spirit. So where he was fully man, he was also fully God at the same time.
In Luke 18:18-20, when Jesus says, "No one is good except God alone,"
He highlights the distinction between divine and human righteousness.
This emphasizes that ultimate goodness resides in God, prompting deeper reflection on what it means to follow Him and attain eternal life.
